Bento de Jesus Caraça was a Portuguese mathematician, faculty professor and anti-fascist resistant, born in 1901 in Vila Viçosa and died with only 47 years old in Lisbon. Founder, with other mathematicians,  of the Instituto Superior de Comércio's Núcleo de Matemática, Física e Química (Center for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) and Centro de Estudos de Matemáticas Aplicadas à Economia (Center for the Study of Applied Mathematics to Economics) and the Gazeta de Matemática (math magazine) and a publisher of science books. 
The 2001 stamp, edited by CTT - Correios de Portugal, was included in the issue “Vultos da História e da Cultura Portuguesa” (History and Culture Portuguese   in a block, with 7 more persons of national and international significance, all with double face value of 85$00 / €0,42 .
