Geometrical arrangements of stones have been found in several places. Celebrated examples include the circular patterns of megaliths at Stonehenge and the linear arrangements at Carnac in Brittany. Although their exact purpose is unknown, it is likely that they had religious significance and were designed to celebrate astronomical events such as sunrise on midsummer’s day.
